Jordan McCloud Transfers to the Texas State Bobcats

In a surprising turn of events, Jordan McCloud, the former James Madison University (JMU) quarterback and reigning Sun Belt Conference Player-of-the-Year, has made a pivotal decision: he’s transferring to Texas State. The Bobcats’ football program, led by head coach GJ Kinne, just scored big with this acquisition.

McCloud’s performance JMU Dukes last season was nothing short of remarkable. He threw for 3,657 yards and 35 touchdowns, leading the Dukes to an overall record of 11-2. But that’s not all—his versatility extended to the ground, where he added 276 rushing yards and eight touchdowns. McCloud’s ability to read defenses, make accurate throws, and create plays on the run caught the attention of football enthusiasts nationwide.

The transfer portal has been buzzing with McCloud’s name. Several Power Four programs, including Auburn and Michigan, expressed interest in the talented quarterback. However, McCloud ultimately chose Texas State, a decision that could reshape the Bobcats’ fortunes.

The Bobcats faced a quarterback dilemma after Jayden de Laura left the university amid controversy and concerns over his commitment. De Laura’s departure followed the settlement of a sexual assault lawsuit stemming from an October 2018 incident. The fallout from this case caused backlash among students, fans, and supporters. De Laura has since declared for the NFL Draft. Adding to the drama, the 2023 Bobcats starting quarterback, TJ Finley, also announced his transfer from Texas State. Finley found a new home at Western Kentucky.

With McCloud’s signing, Texas State gains a seasoned quarterback with one year of eligibility remaining. His arrival vaults the Bobcats into contention for the Sun Belt Conference title next season. Coach Kinne and his staff hit the recruiting trail hard, recognizing the need for a starting-caliber quarterback. McCloud’s experience and skill set make him a valuable asset to a roster already considered one of the conference’s best.

While Texas State isn’t scheduled to face James Madison next season, a potential conference championship matchup could pit McCloud against his former team.
